Eating healthy on the go in Houston doesn’t mean settling for basic side salads. The city's fast-casual scene is packed with vibrant, flavor-forward spots that prioritize whole ingredients, clean proteins, and scratch-made dressings! Best of all, many of these concepts are proudly homegrown and locally operated by Houstonians dedicated to keeping their own community fueled and nourished.
Ojo de Agua
Ojo de Agua brings a vibrant, health-conscious spin to traditional Mexican cuisine with a menu packed with nutrient-dense options like refreshing açaí bowls, cold-pressed juices, and citrus-cured ceviches. With outposts in the River Oaks District and The Woodlands, this sleek spot reimagines fast, casual dining by focusing on food that nourishes the body without sacrificing authentic flavors. For breakfast, don’t miss the Pitaya bowl served with berries, plumb and a topping of coconut flakes. For dinner there’s the Protein Bowl with seared tuna on a rice bed with sweet potatos, beets, cherry tomatoes, lentils, and avocados! Provecho, y'all!
Green Fork & Straw
Founded on a New Orleans family legacy, Green Fork & Straw was brought to Houston by Blair Buerger and his wife Rachel. With convenient outposts in River Oaks, Woodway, and The Heights, every menu item — from quick bites to family-style weeknight meals — is built around clean, sustainably farmed, local ingredients. Fuel up with the namesake Blair Bowl, packed with baby spinach, quinoa, grilled chicken, and roasted sweet potatoes. You can also grab the customer-favorite Cajun Girl Chicken Salad tossed in Creole dressing with pecans. Pair your meal with the Warrior green smoothie, a blend of celery, cucumber, lime, MCT oil, and hemp seeds, for an additive-free energy kick.
Bebidas
The Kalelujah juice — a green blend of kale, spinach, celery, apple, pear, lemon, and ginger — is just one of the standout lineup items at Bebidas. Tucked into River Oaks, this family-owned spot from Adair Concepts focuses on wholesome, energizing options ranging from hearty breakfast tacos to superfood smoothies. Order the protein-heavy Dude smoothie, blended with banana, cold brew, date, almond milk, almond butter, and chocolate protein. For a more substantial bite, the Brown Rice Bowl packs in avocado, radish, marinated chickpeas, kale, a hard-boiled egg, pumpkin seeds, and a ginger miso dressing
ZOA Eateries
Building customizable, halal-certified Moroccan bowls and sandwiches with whole ingredients, ZOA Eateries offers a nutrient-packed Mediterranean approach to fast-casual dining. The brainchild of Morocco native Youssef Nafaa, this new evolution of his original Washington Avenue and Bellaire concepts introduces an all-day menu featuring a dedicated breakfast line and grab-and-go options. At the new Memorial City location, you can build a health-focused meal starting with a base of mixed greens or saffron jasmine rice, layered with slow-braised beef tagine or roasted lamb, and loaded with your choice of over 20 fresh toppings and nine signature sauces.
Brassica
Named after the family of veggies that includes broccoli and kale, the still-new Brassica on Voss Road reimagines fast-casual dining around clean, vegetable-forward, scratch-made ingredients. The menu prioritizes fresh, whole foods with plenty of plant-based options, vibrant pickled vegetables, and house-made dips like hummus and baba crafted with Soom Foods tahini. Build your ideal health-focused bowl or organic pita with crisp falafel, braised chicken shawarma, or slow-smoked beef, all paired with an array of nutrient-dense greens for an effortless, guilt-free meal.
Honest Mary’s
The Smoky Poblano and Sedona Lime bowls headline the menu at Honest Mary’s, now bringing its "life-giving fast food" to River Oaks. Founded by Houston native Nelson Monteith, this entirely gluten-free, fast-casual concept turns clean eating into an art form with customizable grain and green bases, high-quality proteins like line-caught tuna, and scratch-made dressings like cashew lime crema. Rounding out the health-focused lineup are savory sipping broths, organic cold-pressed juices, and fresh aguas frescas — plus a commitment to organic-only produce for any ingredients on the EWG's Dirty Dozen list.
HS Green
A staple on Richmond and 6-10 since 2016, HS Green Fresh Food Kitchen is built around clean, whole-ingredient dining. This bistro makes a promise to ditch MSG, preservatives, artificial colors, and corn syrup by crafting all of their dressings, salsas, and bottled juices in-house. Stop by for the Salmon Ginger Salad topped with shredded kale, edamame, mango, and a Japanese ginger dressing, or grab the hearty Rotisserie Chicken (you can substitute tofu for the chicken!) served alongside lemon garlic herb oil and herb-roasted potatoes. Or, keep it light with the Thai Grilled Chicken Salad, which features rice noodles, jicama, red chilies, and spicy Thai dressing for just 221 calories.
Leaf & Grain
Now spanning six locations across the city, homegrown Leaf & Grain promises 100% seed-oil-free dressings, protein-packed portions, and complex carbs. Started in 2016 by a native Houstonian, Leaf & Grain makes every dressing from scratch using pure olive oil. Order the crowd-favorite Alamo Bowl — a hearty mix of brown rice, kale, roasted cage-free chicken, avocado, Texas cheese, black beans, tortilla chips, and chipotle-lime vinaigrette. Or, the French Country Plate features French lentils, roasted chicken thigh, brown rice, green beans, and shaved parmesan tossed in a mustard vinaigrette.
